Blessing of a Broken Ankle

Hmmm….”Living Creatively”.

Seems that this upcoming course (see below) which I am very excited and honored to teach is maybe something that I not only desire to share with fellow friends, but it is something that I look forward to internalizing myself.

In my current journey to health and healing after breaking my ankle in 3 places 2 weeks ago, “Living Creatively” takes on new meaning.

What has inspired me to delve deeper? Is it the fact that I am trying to figure out how to run a household from my bed? (or let go of running a household from my bed!) Is it the challenge of conveying my needs when I would simply rather do it myself? Or is it the formidable task of mothering 8 kids ka”h, from a horizontal position, while reading books, beading necklaces, doing homework all while trying to rest, heal and let go?

Is it the surrendering and letting go that inspires creativity or is it seeing and feeling the intentions and blessings of  G-d within the painting of life? Are we an admirer of art or are we the artist? Are we choosing our attitudes, thoughts and perspectives and are we blending our colors to create a vibrant life? And how does Judaism fit in?

How can we as women tap into the energy that is found deep within our Judaism? How can we take our very own canvas of life, and paint it with magnificent hues of depth, meaning and connection, all while we go about our busy day to day life.

We as women, have an intrinsic connection. We have the power of Jewish Femininity that infuses our life with a symphony of color in our very own palette, our very own soul.

But how? How do we really live beautifully, with purpose, with creativity? How does Judaism inspire living with color and passing it along to others?

Please join me on a 7 month journey, to delve into our inner spiritual palate, one we may not even know exists.

2 1/3 cups flour

1 Tsp. Baking Powder

1 Tsp. Baking Soda

2 Eggs

2/3 cup sugar

1 cup dark brewed tea, made with 3 tea bags, cooled

1/3 cup vegetable oil

1 cup honey

1/2 medium ripe banana thoroughly mashed

Grated rind of 1 orange

1/8 Tsp. Ground cloves

(This recipe is originally for two 9 x 5″ loaf pans) – Use parchment paper for lining when using pans.

Preheat oven to 350.

Beat eggs, in a mixer at medium speed, gradually ading sugar until pale and ribbon-like. (about 7 -10 minutes…you don’t have to be religious about this step:)

Lower the speed and add the tea, oil, honey and banana, orange rind, cloves and even a dash of cinnamon if you wish. Combine thoroughly.

Gradually add in flour, baking powder and baking soda. (use a whisk is you still have clumps of flour in your batter.) combine well.

(If you are making this cake in the loaf pans, the original recipe says to bake it at 325 for the first 15 minutes and then raise temp. to 350 for another 25 minutes. I found that baking at 350 the entire time works too.This recipe makes 2 loaf size pans.  If you are making cupcakes, bake at 325 for 14 – 17 minutes. This recipe gives you about 27 cupcakes in these holders.)

This Sunday at 9:00am – 11:00am Davening and reading of the Ten Commandments, followed by a delicious kiddush brunch! (read: Bagels, lox, cream cheese, salads, cheesecake, ice cream, toppings, sour cream coffee cake, cookies and more!….of course:)

At Chabad. (No fee, simply come by, any time, for as long as you wish. Yup. That simple.)

Chana’s Cheesecake Popsicles:

Using a hand blender blend the following:

  • One 8oz package of cream cheese
  • 1/3 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup greek yogurt (plain)
  • 1/4 – 1/2 cup coconut sugar (or sweetener of choice)
  • (Add a couple strawberries for a berry flavor!)

Pour into Popsicle molds. (I doubled this recipe and I filled 6 popsicles).

Freeze for a couple hours or overnight!

So creamy and refreshing!

I mean, we look at that map and think, “Ok, if I am HERE and I need to get THERE, then I just simply follow the route”…simple, isn’t it?

Well, in life, in fact the day you and I were born, we were given a gift.

The Torah.

Our blueprint for life. Our very own directory that helps remind us “YOU ARE HERE”….you are in G-d’s beautiful world, with a special soul, endless opportunities to nourish it.

So, consider standing in front of Mount Sinai, looking above at the luminous Aseres Hadibros (Ten Commandments, Our Torah, Our Blueprint for life)…and feel that you really are here you really are present in your connection to G-d, to Judaism, to your soul.

Consider you are running a spiritual marathon…I mean, arent we all in midst of our journey, tracking our distance from where we came from, using our GPS calibrated to the rhythm of our soul, reaching goals, aspirations and dreams?

3317 years ago we received the Ten Commandments on Mount Sinai. No cell phone panoramic view, no Facebook to tag who was ‘there’, no online registration to track attendance…

Yet, you and I were there with every soul of the Jewish nation. Yup! Just imagine, the biggest most unbelievable selfie on earth! Only it was our souls that were capturing the moment, zooming in, focusing on our commitment to G-d.

How about re-living the moment, in the moment?

Flavor Your Shabbos!


Amazing to think it’s been a week since we were eating matzah and celebrating Pesach!

Here we are, flour covered countertops, mounds of neatly braided challah and a new energy of creativity in the kitchen!

I must say, I absolutely love my new cookbook called “Jerusalem” that I received as a gift from my dear friend Michelle Lerman, (in honor of my birthday which was Erev Pesach! Ya, I know….one hectic birthday!)

I couldn’t wait to jump right in and try out some new recipes!

Here is a delicious dip that I’ll be serving tonight. Complex flavors and oh so good!

Pair this with challah and you’ll be good to go!

Candle Lighting tonight is at 7:30pm



Date syrup, which we use here to add intensity, is a popular natural sweetener with wonderful richness and treacly depth. Use it for salad and vegetable dressings, to sweeten stews or just drizzle over porridge in the morning. It is available from health food shops and Middle Eastern grocers but can be substituted with golden syrup, maple syrup or even treacle. This dip seems to be fantastically popular with anyone who tries it. There is something about the magical combination of tahini and pumpkin or squash that we always tend to come back to (see also roasted butternut squash, page 36). Serve as a starter with bread or as part of a mezze selection.

Serves 6-8

(p 69, Jerusalem Cookbook by Ottolenghi)

1 very large butternut squash (about 1.2kg), peeled and cut into chunks (970g in total once peeled)
3 tbsp olive oil
1 tsp ground cinnamon
70g light tahini paste
120g Greek yoghurt
2 small garlic cloves, crushed
1 tsp mixed black and white sesame seeds (or just white, if you don’t have black)
1 1/2 tsp date syrup
2 tbsp chopped coriander (optional)


  1. Preheat oven to 400F.
  2. Spread squash out in a medium roasting pan. Pour over the olive oil and sprinkle on the cinnamon and 1/2 tsp. salt. Mix together well, cover the pan with aluminum foil, and roast in the oven for 70 minutes, stirring once halfway through. Remove from the oven and let cool.
  3. Transfer squash to a food processor, along with the tahini, yogurt, and garlic. Roughly pulse so that everything is combined into a coarse paste, without the spread becoming smooth. Stir in cilantro.
  4. Spread the butternut onto a plate. Sprinkle with sesame seeds, and drizzle the date syrup/molasses on top. Serve with bread.
